Members of the Point Lobos Foundation are invited to attend the 2019 Annual Meeting on Saturday, March 30, 2019 from 9am-12pm. We are pleased to announce that Jonathan B. Jarvis will be our keynote speaker. Mr Jarvis, who currently serves as Executive Director of UC Berkeley’s Institute for Parks, People and Biodiversity, served as the 18th director of the National Park Service (NPS) for eight years during the Obama administration. As NPS director, Jarvis initiated extensive programs to address climate change in the national parks, expanded the NPS by adding 22 new parks and led the service through its Centennial with a vision for a second century of park stewardship, engaging communities through recreation, conservation and historic preservation programs.
Mr. Jarvis is the author of “The Future of Conservation in America: A Chart for Rough Water”, which describes the long-term and immediate challenges facing the conservation movement in America. In his book, he describes a clear and compelling guide for the future of conservation in America, a declaration to inspire the next generation of conservation leaders. At the meeting, Mr Jarvis will share his vision for the future of conservation in America in the face of federal policy challenges, climate change and biodiversity impacts. The face of America is changing and so, too, must our collective approach to conservation.
Additional highlights include Point Lobos Foundation awards honoring exceptional service. Retired ranger Chuck Bancroft will receive the 2019 Jud Vandevere Lifetime Achievement Award for his legacy of contributions to Point Lobos and to the people who visit it. Stephen Bachman, Senior Planner for the Monterey District of California State Parks, will be honored for his innovative support and collaborative approach to natural resource research, restoration and partnerships at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve.
